Artist’s Notes:
A year ago, Xinming and Zixuan traveled from the distant South Pacific to New York, an enigmatic and aloof metropolis shimmering with dream and frost. Our greatest joy, apart from being newly crowned grandparents, was a quiet walk through falling snow and the sudden appearance of a northern cardinal, its scarlet wings glowing against the white cedar.
In that fleeting moment, Zhuangzi’s vision (369-286 BCE) arose unbidden in my heart with his teaching that “when the light of righteousness shines, all beings draw near.” That harmony between spirit and nature seeped like ink into my thoughts, and flowed, unrestrained, from the tip of my jade brush. Hence, I studied these creatures for months, their temperament, affection, and inner rhythm. Countless times I worked and reworked, sketch after sketch, brushstroke after brushstroke until, at last, under the keen and resolute eye of Art Director Zixuan, the two works Flying Wing to Wing and Joy in the Lotus Pond took their final form.
These paintings express the artist’s reverence for the wondrous harmony and resonance between different species in nature, an allegory for the bonds of kinship and love among humankind, where wisdom and serenity nurture each other. No matter how unpredictable the world may be, the eternal rhythm of life, ever flowing, ever renewing, endures. Just as the blue Victoria crowned pigeon symbolizes steadfast devotion, and the noble northern cardinal embodies grace and dignity, so too does this rare union celebrate the beauty of fidelity.
With delicate strokes of traditional Chinese ink and wash, the artist renders these Western birds with spirit and tenderness, gently alighting them upon a branch of happiness. May the newlyweds soar together like two birds in perfect flight, and may their hearts be joined in a hundred years of blissful harmony.
